Get 6 months ahead of the mainstream media, join the "Krewe" for a fantastic conversation over a tasting of whiskey and find your "Implicit Bias."
Bonus content for implicit bias radio. We're talking about tradition on this show. And one of the things that I often find with people engaged in business, with men specifically, is that we tend to want to do things on our own. And there is this tradition down here in southern Louisiana, for those who don't know, of rugged individualism as opposed to partnership with those that we trust. Now, pure transparency. I've had business partners who damn near put me in bankruptcy. Yep. I had a business partner who left me hanging to the tune of just shy of six figures when I didn't have barely five figures to show. Right. But there is some humility in doing it right and figuring out that asking someone to be a partner is not the same as leeching off of somebody else, Caitlin.
SPEAKER_02
Well, and that's where I I've struggled, right? So I'm reading this book, Who Not How.
SPEAKER_00
Oh, now you get why I asked you to shut up for three seconds.
SPEAKER_02
I was quiet for six. And uh in Who Not How, like I I confuse hard work with payout, right? Like the harder I do it, the I grind more it'll pay out. And the reality is I can grind as much as I want. If the right person ever sees it, it never happens. So what I was saying, and the the analogy I was making was like, if I wanted to do a rustic renegade cigar, I would sit here and try to work with it and not step on Renee's toes because of our relationship, our friendship, and work as opposed to saying, Hey, Renee, could you help me do a rustic renegade cigar and how would we go through this process? And Renee would make it exponentially easier than I would. Yeah, because I know people.
SPEAKER_03
And and you know, and we could have that done in a couple of months.
SPEAKER_02
And if we wanted to collaborate on it and co-brand it, we would do that together and both profit off of it financially, spiritually, morally, right?
SPEAKER_03
So when are we starting this project?
SPEAKER_02
Well, we yeah. So when we look at everything else we do, right? And and for many, many people, I have been there who my phone rings all day long. Caleb, I'm trying to get this done. Can you help me out? And I'm like, oh yeah, I got the guy. And I I'm the guy that people call for solutions because uh that's what I'm good at about.
SPEAKER_03
It's called networking. I've been doing that for 40 years. People would call me and go, hey Renee, who do you know that does and yeah, because we know people.
SPEAKER_02
And the problem you run into is like, I'm fine helping someone else. Yes. You want me to help myself? Fuck you.
SPEAKER_03
It can't, yeah, it doesn't work for you. It works for other people. Yeah, so it always does.
SPEAKER_02
Whenever I when I started when I sat down and started reading the book and talking to people, I'm like, why have I never asked my friends for help? You know, that's when I was like, ooh. Because I'm I'm quick to help. I was just telling you, Jared, like, I would I would love to help you get this in another location, it's in another state. And I never think of doing that for myself, right? So we forget who we know, and we forget that we need a helping hand as well. And it makes life very difficult at times.
SPEAKER_00
This is a spiritual theme that for Jared. I don't know if you know, Caleb made his axe retreat, what, two, three years ago, Caleb? Three. And we had this conversation about I still read the letters and all that too. Our desire is men to do it on our own. I am alone, I am I mean, we we become a real masculine version of the idiot who was a senator out of Minnesota who had that character on Saturday Night Live. I'm good enough and I'm smart enough, and dug on it, people like me. But at Al Franken, right? But my point is we we have been trained down here, especially in southern Louisiana, where we have this attitude of they threw us in the swamp, my ancestor survived, we're gonna fucking survive too. Yeah, we'll make it.
SPEAKER_01
We're gonna make it happen.
SPEAKER_00
But instead of doing it together, we try to do it on our own. When we do it together and we figure out I'm not the only one here, it becomes a much easier rubric to solve.
SPEAKER_01
Yeah. And if you've been through that process of any type of retreat, whether it's axe or Crusillo, whatever, once you go through that process, you see that there are, I always call it like-minded individuals doing like-minded things. We we need to surround ourselves with like-minded people doing like-minded things. And if we do that, then we will find the networking piece of the puzzle. Just like me talking to Kavan and coming here and meeting you, and then taking everything full circle. Like that's how it's supposed to work. And that's how that's how God wants it to work. And the more we do those things and the more we put it in his hands, like you, I I think you so Kavan was at our Bible study last night. We had 21 guys there. Awesome. And I think you saw that aspect of it in the sense that guys were willing to, these are my people, this is my tribe. I will do whatever I need to do to make sure that these guys know that I'm in it with them. I'm gonna get down in the trenches, I'm gonna make things happen, I'm gonna do those things.
SPEAKER_00
Saying that I used to have all the time when I would teach leadership, and and I learned it from a great leader, and it was always this. Leaders never do things to their people, they do things with their people. And that concept, when you realize that you not only lead your bosses, your people, you you have to lead in all directions. But when you do and you recognize, you know what, we can all do this together, rowing that boat in the same direction becomes so much easier.
SPEAKER_02
Yes. Well, and that that's where loyalty and all this other stuff comes into play, right? Because when I look at my circle and I'm like, oh, you need a roofer? Got a guy. You need a plumber? Got a guy. You need an asphalt guy? Got a guy. You need a mechanic? You need an ass? Yeah. It just goes down the list. And when I ring the bell. Ring the bell. Oh, ring the bell. Okay. And when I hear about someone not using one of my people that that are my friends and my confidants, I'm like, why in the hell did you go to so-and-so? Yep. Yeah, why would you go outside of the circle? Yeah. Right. You know, it's like, oh, they were five dollars cheaper. I'm like, if if your friendship has a if your loyalty has a five dollar price tag, then you're not loyal.
SPEAKER_03
Yeah. Exactly.
SPEAKER_00
Look, we we had somebody, and this story is relatively well known. We've had people who operate in the space of some of the same spaces that partners of this show, friends of this show have. And they've come to us and said, Hey, I want to do. And I've looked at them and said, You can't afford it. And they say, What do you mean I can't afford it? I can write a check for anything. I said, There's no price, and that's why you can't afford it. Right. Because these, these are our people, and that is not replaceable, right? The more we operate in our community and our little group underneath that premise, the harder we are to kill. Because now you're not trying to kill one, you're trying to kill all nine heads of the Hydra at the same time, and it just can't happen. It just can't happen.
SPEAKER_03
Well, and I mean the the network is strong, and it just, yeah. You screw one guy over, oh, and it's gonna be hell to pay.
SPEAKER_02
You know, show me your network and I'll see your net worth, right? Yeah, and I'm not talking dollar signs, right? Because the the reality of what we have here is when when you look at the people we all associate with, the men that we associate with, what do you see? Men of faith, men of conviction, men of purpose, men of family, yes, yes, men of principle.
SPEAKER_03
Look, and I I gotta bring this up, you know. About though, my mom died, and it brought tears to my eyes, the response I had from the guys from the show. You know, it just the people that yeah, I'm on a show with these guys and we talk and bullshit and everything else, but they showed up, they were there. You know, when I walked into the church and Father Taj and Father Joe were there, I was like, how did these guys know about it? They were there. It just it's amazing.
SPEAKER_00
It that network is amazing. And I agree the network isn't dollar signs, it's it's much, much more.
SPEAKER_03
Yeah.
SPEAKER_00
And look, we we we are uncut, we are unfiltered occasionally. We get sentimental on this show, but ultimately at the end of the day, this is what hopefully you like, share, comment, tell people about because this is ultimately the true bonus of implicit bias radio. Cheers.
